International student checklist


Before you arrive

  • Apply for a visa or entry clearance (if applicable)

  • Apply for accommodation or research private housing (accommodation should be booked and confirmed prior to entry into the UK)

  • Plan your journey to ensure you arrive in time to attend any inductions programmes

  • Arrange travel insurance

  • Arrange medical insurance if you are studying at Amity for less than 6 months

  • If you are studying at Amity for more than six months as a Tier 4 student, you will be required to pay an immigration health surcharge (allowing NHS access) as part of your visa application fee. The charge will be £150 per year of leave granted on your visa.

  • If you need to bring medication make sure you have a doctor's note translated into English to accompany it

  • Plan your budget

  • Check for any restrictions on the amount of money you can take out of your country and any restrictions on goods that can be bought into the UK

  • Ensure you have access to sufficient funds should you experience any initial complications opening a UK bank account

Packing your bags

  • Valuables (phone, wallet, iPod etc.)

  • Passport (containing visa if applicable)

  • Amity offer letter and/or CAS email

  • Financial evidence

  • Address of UK accommodation

  • Tickets/Online flight booking

  • UK pound sterling for any initial costs (taxi fares, food etc.)

  • Clothing (a jumper, waterproof etc.)

What not to pack

  • Items that can easily be bought in the UK

  • Books - these will take up considerable baggage allowance and it is unlikely that you will receive your reading list until you have enrolled

  • Towels and bedding - these will take up valuable space in your luggage and can be purchased locally or through some student accommodation

  • Banned or restricted items - these can be viewed on the HM Revenue & Customs website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/banned-restricted.htm

When you have arrived

  • Collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) (Tier 4 students only)

  • Enrol - you will have received an enrolment appointment

  • Pay the remaining tuition fees if you have not done so already

  • Attend induction programme - details of these will be sent directly from the Academic Unit

Immediate "to do" list

  • Contact Amity Office to let us know that you have arrived

  • Register with a GP

  • Register with the police if required

  • Open a UK bank account

  • Get a mobile phone/UK SIM card
