Widening participation in Higher Education

Access to Business Education Centre (ABEC)

Amity is committed to providing higher education to all who have the potential to benefit from academic study. We want to attract the most talented students regardless of their educational background.

The university’s Access to Business Education Centre exists to support this goal, by helping prospective students who face disadvantages in accessing higher education (state sector, low participation neighborhoods, ethnic minorities, mature or disabled students).

ABEC fulfills this role by providing advice, knowledge base activities, support and guidance to prospective students, parents, teachers, governors and careers advisers to help those who wish to progress to university.

The APP-Outreach team support schools and colleges across the United Kingdom in preparing their students for university. We host a series of on-campus events designed to support students in choosing a university and programme of choice for their higher education. In addition, the team are very happy to attend off campus events including HE Fairs as well as delivering talks surrounding Higher Education within your school or college.

If you would like to discuss on or off-campus events, or just find out more about how our team can support your school or college, please contact: abec@amity.ac.uk

Contextual admission

Amity is committed to admitting students who have the potential to succeed and benefit from our programmes of study. We believe that a diverse student body makes for a more interesting and dynamic learning environment and brings benefits to our student population as a whole. However, we also recognise that student learner journeys differ considerably, as does the level of support, advice and guidance available to students.

Whilst academic grades remain the primary tool in assessing academic ability, there is increasing evidence in the higher educator sector that universities should consider more than academic achievement alone when making admission decisions.

The university has therefore implemented a contextual admission policy, that aims to take account of these differences in background, acknowledge the context in which a student has achieved their academic grades, and thereby better identify students with the potential to succeed in higher education.

Access and participation plan

Amity University [IN] London is committed to providing higher education to all who have the potential to benefit from academic study, and has intended to take a leading role in increasing awareness among young people of the importance, values and benefits of higher education

The university’s strategy for widening participation is set out in our Access and Participation Plan approved with the Office for Students (OfS). The plan, developed in consultation with the student representatives, is overseen by the Access and Participation Strategic Group and Teaching and Learning Committee and covers the whole student lifecycle, from increasing the entry rates of widening participation students into HE to improving retention and attainment rates whilst at university and supporting progression into graduate-level employment or further study.
